In the modern Internet enabled world finding cheap used cars is easier than it's ever been.  eBay, Yahoo and other sites make it simple to find and compare features such as price, gas mileage and others.  Avoid the sucker bets by keeping a few things in mind.

Online doesn't mean 100% honest.  Sometimes people put too much trust in the Internet, just as they put too much trust in a book or the media.  Not everything on the radio or television is true.  The Internet is no different.  Promises can be fabricated, as can proof of those promises.  The same predators that run shady used car lots can get onto the InternetShady car dealers use the Internet too.  But now the buyer can't see their cheap suit, smell their cheap cologne, or get a glimpse of the bad condition of the cars or the facility.  Programs such as Photoshop allow dings and dents to be taken out of car images.  People ignore the normal used car precautions when buying online.  Diligence is always wise even though every online car seller isn't a crook.

Have a used car inspected before buying it.  That means driving the car to a garage.  Get a mechanic to take a look for you if you won't see the car before the deal is complete.  Many shops will look at a car for you.  There's no need to rely on the seller's inspection or garage.  Make sure someone not related to the seller looks it over.  For under $50 you can avoid problems that could cost thousands, including the money spent on the used car purchase price.

Don't haggle monthly payments, negotiate price.  If the dealer is pushing payment amounts - “I can get you in this car for $x a month – demand to know the purchase price.  Dealers often use the financing to add a few dollars to the price, so don't use their finance company.  Go in with your own financing or better yet save up to pay cash for the used car.  Remember to demand a discount for a cash payment.
